This article explores how the eye of horus, an emblem of protection, health, and royal power, has transcended its ancient origins to become a symbol embraced within contemporary spiritual practices and occult rituals.

The Historical and Mythological Origins of the Eye of Horus

The eye of horus, also known as Wadjet, originated in ancient Egypt over 3,000 years ago. It is deeply embedded in mythological narratives surrounding Horus, the sky god and king of the gods. According to myth, Horus lost his left eye during a conflict with Set, the god of chaos, but it was later restored by Hathor or Thoth, symbolising healing, restoration, and the cycle of renewal.

Historically, the symbol appeared in amulets, funerary objects, and royal insignia, signifying divine protection and sovereignty. Its distinctive design, comprising a stylised human eye with distinctive markings, evokes a sense of watchfulness and spiritual safeguarding.

The Symbol’s Enduring Relevance in Esoteric and Occult Traditions

In recent decades, the eye of horus has been adopted by various esoteric groups, from Hermetic traditions to New Age spirituality, as a symbol representing enlightenment, inner vision, and the awakening of consciousness. Its incorporation into modern practices demonstrates a continued reverence for ancient symbols, reframed within contemporary contexts of personal empowerment and mystical exploration.

For instance, spiritual practitioners often associate the eye with the third eye chakra—an energy centre linked with intuition and higher perception.
